The coastline of Murcia is characterised by its sandy beaches. The most beautiful natural wonder on the coast is the Mar Menor, a shallow lagoon which is the largest of its kind in Spain. The water in the lagoon is very salty and maintains a hot temperature. The city is divided by the Segura River and is known for its beautiful Baroque Cathedral, Almudi Palace and the castle of Monteagudo, a fortress from the 11th century, the Market de Veronicas, the Malecon Garden, the University of Murcia and the Museum Ramon Gaya.
