The large town of Torrevieja
is situated 8 kilometres
from Villamartin and is located next to the sea, in the south of the Valencia
region. Torrevieja is surrounded by two natural saltwater lagoons, which have now been
designated natural parks and are often frequented by hundreds of stunning
flamingos. The World Health
organisation recommends Torrevieja as having one of the healthiest climates in
the world, caused by a combination of constant year round warm temperatures and
the rich minerals in the salt lakes. The natural salt lakes dry the air,
reducing humidity and producing a healthy atmosphere, especially for arthritis
sufferers.
Torrevieja has 7 EU blue flag beaches which range from active beaches with a variety of water sports, to secluded rocky and sandy coves. There is a long cosmopolitan sea front promenade of shops, cafes, and restaurants. One of the largest markets in Europe is held every Friday with a selection of genuine Spanish handicrafts, low priced leather goods, shoes, textiles, silver, and local produce. There is a huge variety of restaurants including Italian, French, German, Chinese, Indian, Korean, Scandinavian, Serbian, Croatian and Mexican. Famous for local and fresh fish, the Torrevieja specialty is the Caldero which consists of different types of fish, rice and the juice of the fish. |
